Family Planning Activities

The Family Planning activity includes counselling, supplying contraceptives, training in practicing Family Planning, and providing information and education related to family planning.

The counselling is provided who are seeking guidance and advice on how to control the birth of their child. The advice is provided by trained employees or doctors of the Family Planning Clinics. There is an assurance that the privacy of the client is maintained. Family Planning also includes training to people who can themselves plan their family without seeking guidance from others. The other activity is providing information to people on family planning. The activity which gets the major attention is that of supplying the contraceptives. But there are many things you need to consider while selecting a contraceptive. Issues such as your life style, side effects, ease of use and health issues need to be considered before going for a particular type of contraceptive.

There are many contraceptives available in the market. A few contraceptives used are:

A pill is a contraceptive which can be consumed orally and makes the uterus unsuitable for pregnancy. It also thicken the mucus of the cervix so that the sperm cannot enter the uterus. It has to be taken daily and it contains the hormones oestrogen and progestogen.

A vaginal ring is another contraceptive that is used nowadays. It is to be inserted in to the vagina. Once it is inserted into the vagina it releases the hormones oestrogen and progestogen. It also prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation. It also thickens the mucus of cervix so that the sperm cannot enter the uterus.

Progestogen-only contraceptive pill (POP) is a pill, which has only one hormone Progestogen and works same as the Oral Pill. Depo Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (DMPA) is a hormone, which works like Progestogen and has to be injected every 12 weeks to prevent pregnancy. It also works in the same way as the pill. Condoms are the most used for family planning. There are condoms both for male and female. They work by preventing the sperms to enter the uterus. Lastly many couples go for sterilization. In this method the fallopian tube of the female is blocked so that the ovum is blocked. In males the vas deferens is removed to block the passage of the sperms.
